“Good morning,
afternoon, evening, or otherwise, this is Ben Montgomery's voice mail. Please leave a
message.” Beep. “Hey b****, show up to CrossFit tonight.” Wow. This sounds
like something I want to do! Yeah, all that explanation of what “Cross Fit” is
totally going to get me to go! Ok, I will then.
EriK, “Spiderman”, and EriC, “Warpath”, introduced me to CrossFit On The River
back in mid to late October after I inquired into their slow, stiff movements
and muffled groans while performing normally painless everyday tasks. Needless
to say, I got my fill and then some of what they were having and still haven’t
been able to put down the “bottle”. I can’t even remember what the workout was
the first night but I do know it was over quick, fast, and in a hurry, leaving
me gasping for breath and searching for more… a good night’s sleep later.
Running CC and Track in high school had put me in the mindset that running
50-90 miles a week and doing lots of pushups and sit-ups would condition me for
most anything the average life could throw my way. Let’s just say that applies
to the below-average.
CFOTR smashed that BS right back at me and instantly, my body became addicted
to a new kind of pain. I hadn’t experienced runners high in at least a year but
after the first night of CF, I walked out on air, ready to conquer the world.
Of course, that earth-shattering spirit was backed by what felt like the
strength of a mouse, but what the hell, I felt awesome! On top of it all, there
was a challenge posted on the board. One hundred days of burpees, starting at
one and ending at one hundred. You can’t just challenge an ex-CC runner and
expect them to sit idle so from that point on, Cross Fit became a part of my
weekly routine.
It’s great to show up on cold nights when most people have thoughts of a warm
fire, and kindle a raging fire within, competing against other members
for most reps or fastest time while keeping good form under the watchful eyes
of Shaun, Jenna, and Tony. I’m looking forward to improving myself and
celebrating the achievements of all the members for many moons.
See y’all Monday!
